The country and the world owe President Carter a tremendous debt of gratitude for the actions he took as President to ensure that the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten. In 1978, President Carter created the President’s Commission on the Holocaust responsible for submitting a report “with respect to the establishment and maintenance of an appropriate memorial to those who perished in the Holocaust.”
President Carter said, “Out of our memory and understanding we must forge an unshakable oath with all civilized people that never again will the world stand silent, never again will the world look the other way or fail to act in time to prevent this terrible crime of genocide.” His efforts and success in establishing a “living memorial” to ensure that the lessons of the Holocaust are taught in perpetuity most certainly paved the way for organizations like ours that is dedicated towards creating a permanent memorial in New York State.
